Night Veterinary Surgeon Chester
My independent client near Chester is seeking a confident Night Veterinary Surgeon to join its dedicated out of hours team within an RCVS accredited multidisciplinary referral hospital.
This is a rare opportunity to manage a varied emergency and critical care caseload with access to referral standard facilities, experienced nursing support and referral clinicians. The hospital is independently owned and committed to providing exceptional, accessible and affordable emergency care without restricting the use of advanced equipment.
The role
• Permanent Night Veterinary Surgeon position
• 0.75 FTE, averaging 31 to 33 hours per week annually
• Seven nights on followed by 14 nights off
• Working hours from 7:30pm until 8:30am
• Salary from £60,000 to £85,000 pro rata, based on a 40 hour week

• Experienced RVN working alongside you throughout the night
• Referral clinician support available
• Approximately five to 15 inpatients per night
• No external call centre, with calls managed directly by the hospital team
• On site daytime administration support
You will provide emergency treatment to out of hours patients while managing the ongoing care of hospitalised cases originating from local practices and the hospital’s referral service.
The role will also involve seeing emergency cases and, following training, admitting and triaging emergency referrals under the direction of the relevant referral clinician.
Facilities and clinical support
The hospital provides unrestricted access to an excellent range of referral standard equipment, including:
• CT scanning
• Endoscopy
• Ultrasound
• Extensive in house laboratory facilities
• Drip pumps and syringe drivers
• Blood transfusion products held on site
• Participation in the Blood Sharing Scheme
The team also aims to accommodate emergency home visits wherever possible.
About you
The successful candidate will be a confident, capable and professional Veterinary Surgeon with a genuine interest in emergency and critical care.
You will:
• Be comfortable managing a varied and occasionally challenging emergency caseload
• Be confident working independently with support available when required
• Provide exceptional standards of patient and client care
• Maintain accurate and thorough clinical records
• Work collaboratively with the night, daytime and referral teams
• Be enthusiastic about contributing to a growing independent hospital
• Be confident managing cases including GDV, haemoperitoneum, pleural effusion and diabetic ketoacidosis
This position would suit an experienced ECC Veterinary Surgeon or a capable first opinion vet with strong emergency experience who wants to develop closer involvement in the management of referral cases.
